1964 Olympic Bronze Medalist 10000 Meters
Clarke set 17 world records during his career, but never captured an Olympic gold nedal. He lit the Olympic cauldron in Melborne in 1956 as a 19 year old. Clarke competed in the 1964 Olympics, taking the bronze at 10,000 meters and finishing ninth in the 5,000 meters and the marathon. In 1968, he finished fifth at 5,000 meters and 6th at 10,000 meters. He won four Commonwealth Games silver medals between 1962 and '70. In 1965, he set twelve world records and was named Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News. He has been mayor of the Gold Coast since 2004.
