Gerulaitis won 24 career singles titles between 1974 and 1984, including the 1977 Australian Open. He lost the 1979 U.S. Open Final to John McEnroe and the 1980 French Open to Bjorn Borg. He also won eight doubles titles, including the 1975 Wimbledon doubles championship with Sandy Mayer. Gerulaitis had a high career ranking of third in 1978. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty heating system in 1994 at the age of 40.
