Twelve-Time European Champion

Gilks was one of the greatest badminton players of all time. Her career largely predated the advent of the World Championships. She won eleven All England Open Championships, two in singles, three in doubles and six in mixed doubles. Between 1972 and 1986 she won twelve European Championships, sweeping singles, doubels and mixed doubles in 1974 and '76. The World Championships were not instituted until 1977, where Gilkes won silver medals in singles and mixed doubles. Gilks won bronze medals in women's doubles in 1983 and capped her career with a bronze in mixed doubles in 1987. In 1999, Gilks was inducted into the World Badminton Hall of Fame.
