1978 Commonwealth Games Champion
Lerwill failed to qualiify for the long jump final at the 1968 Olympics and then finished seventh in the 1972 Olympics in the long jump at 25' 11 1/2". He was ranked 8th in the world in 1970 and '72 and ninth in 1974. In 1974 he won the Commonwealth Games and captured the World University Games title in 1970. He was the first Englishman to clear 26 feet and was a one time British high jump record holder at 2.10, he was also a 16.20 triple jumper.
