1985 World Lightweight Double Sculls Champion

Mitchell made the first of her three Olympic appearances in the pairs with Lin Clark at the 1976 Games in Montreal where they finished tenth. She returned to the Olympics in 1980, this time in the single sculls where she finished fifth. At the 1981 World Championships, her silver medal in single sculls was the first ever World Championship medal for a British woman. Mitchell returned for a third Olympics in 1984, finishing sixth in the single sculls. She capped her career, once again teaming with Lin Clark to capture the 1985 World Championship in lightweight double sculls, the first gold medal ever for a female British boat. She died at age 66 from injuries sustained while bicylcing when she crashed into a parked car in Sydney, Australia.
