Born in Curacao, Roethof won the individual championship at the 1977 World Karate Championships, becoming the first non-Japanese winner, and helped the Netherlands win the team gold medal. He defeated Great Britain's Eugene Codrington in the final. He later won bronze in 1980 and silver in 1984 as well as the European title in 1979.
