Salming, a defenseman, played for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the N.H.L. from 1973-'89 and finished his N.H.L. career with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1989-'90 season. During his career he scored 150 goals with 637 assists. Salming played in three All-Star Games (1976-'78) and was named to the N.H.L. Second All-Star Team five times (1975, '76, '78-'80) and the First Team in 1977. He played for Sweden in the 1976 Canada Cup and was named to the tournament All-Star Team. In 1991, he helped Sweden win the World Ice Hockey Championships and competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics at age 40, where the Swedish team finished fifth. In 1996, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame and in 2008 he was one of six played named to the IIHF centennial All-Star team.
