Three Time World Gymnastics Champion

Thomas won the first ever gold medal for the United States at the World Gymnastics Championships by capturing the floor exercise in 1978. The following year he won both the floor exercise and the high bar and finished second in the all-around and on the parallel bars and pommel horse. In 1979, Thomas won the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amatuer athlete, the first gymnast to win the award. Thomas lost his chance at Olympic glory with the boycott of the 1980 Olympics by Jimmy Carter. In 1985, Thomas starred in the gymnastics/martial arts film Gymkata.
