1976 World Sprint Champion

Granath first competed at the 1972 Olympics, finishign 16th at both 500 and 1500 meters. Granath finished 8th, 6th, 7th and 5th at the next four World Sprint Championships (1972-'75). At the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, he finished 13th at both 500 and 1,000 meters. A month later at the 1976 World Sprint Championships, with the eastern block countries boycotting with the championships being held in West Berlin, Granath took the overall title, despite not winning any of the four races. Granath would continue to compete internationally until 1983, falling at both the 500 and 1000 meters at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. Granath did have a third place finish at the 1978 World Sprint Championships.
