Berkovitz was as shooting guard who played one year in the United States at UNLV. He returned to Israel and played for Maccabi, leading the club to European titles in 1977 and 1981. As a member of the Israeli national team, he helped them to a fourth place finish at the 1974 European Championships and was the tournament's leading scorer. At the 1979 European Championships, Berkovich was the tournament M.V.P., leading Israel to a silver medal behind the Soviet Union. Berkovitz was also a member of the Israeli squad that finished seventh at the 1986 World Championships. In 1991, he was named as one of the 50 greatest players in F.I.B.A. history.
