Birdsong was the second overall pick in the 1977 NBA draft by the Kansas City Kings. He has completed four years at the University of Houston, where he was the program's second all-time leading scorer behind Elvin Hayes. In addition, he was a member of the 1975 Pan Am Games gold medal team. The 6' 3" guard played four seasons for the Kings, and was an All-Star in each of his final three seasons with the franchise. Birdsong played the next seven seasons with the New Jersey Nets, earning his fourth All-Star selection in 1984. He played one final season with the Boston Celtics.He finished his NBA career with a total of 12,544 points for an average of 18.0 points per game.
