Three-Time All-Star
Bonds played fourteen Major League seasons with eight different teams. Playing for the San Francisco Giants from 1968-'74, he appeared in three All-Star Games (1971, '73 and '75 with the New York Yankees), winning the game's M.V.P. award in 1973. His 187 strikeouts in 1969 were a major league record and his 1970 mark of 189 strikeouts stood for 24 years. Bonds had a combination of speed and power that set him apart from most major leaguers. In 1973 he hit 39 home runs and stole 43 bases. He primarily batted leadoff and in 1975, he hit a then record 11 leadoff hom eruns, eventually setting the career mark with 35, both marks have been surpassed. For his career, Bonds totalled 332 home runs and 461 stolen bases. His son Barry, is baseball's all-time career home run leader and his sister Rosie finished 8th in the 80 meter hurdles at the 1964 Olympic Games. Bonds died at the age of 57 after a battle with lung cancer.
