1978 MEN'S PRELIMINARY 2
In his third appearance in the Superstars, Los Angeles Dodger firstbaseman Steve Garvey finished first in a preliminary round ahead of high jump world record holder Dwight Stones. Five of the competitors had won or would win a baseball M.V.P. award. I have limited details, but most of the information on the final four events. The golf, closest to the pin, event saw an unusual tie for first place as both Joe Morgan and Jim Rice came within 4'9" of the hole. Morgan defeated Rice in a one-stroke tiebreaker. The competition was extremely close entering the obstacle course. Garvey has scored all of his points in the first six events and was not entered in the obstacle course. High jumper Dwight Stones had a chance to beat Garvey with a first or second place finish in the obstacle course; however, he had trouble over the wall and started to make up time but incurred a penalty by stepping over the line on the water hazard. Even had Stones not been penalized, his time would have only been third best. Cincinnati Reds second baseman Joe Morgan could take the overall by winning the obstacle course, and his times in Superteams events demonstrated that to be possible, but Morgan pushed to blocking sled to the right and lost a few seconds. Surprisingly, Ron Cey, Los Angeles Dodger thirdbaseman, finished with the second best time to take fourth place overall and a spot in the finals. Had it not been for a penalty on the tires, Bobby Bonds would have finished second overall. I know the final totals, except for Ferguson, Garlits and Montefusco who totalled four points.
