In 1956, Charlton started a 17 year career with Manchester United where he played 606 matches and scored 199 goals. He made his first appearance for the English national team in 1958, earning 106 caps over the next 12 years and scoring 49 goals. In 1966, he helped England win their only World Cup and was named the European Footballer of the Year. Charlton appeared for England in the 1970 World Cup, his last appearance for the national team. In 1973, he left Manchester United and played three seasons for Preston North End and 1976 with Waterford.
