Cowens joined the Boston Celtics one year after Bill Russell's retirement and although only 6'9", Cowens played center for Boston on two championship teams. Cowens earned co-Rookie of the Year honors in 1970-'71 and was the All-Star Game M.V.P. in 1973. Cowens also earned the N.B.A. M.V.P. for the 1972-'73 season, and led the Celtics to N.B.A. Championships in 1974 and '76. He retired from the Celtics following the 1979-'80 season, but returned for one more season with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1982-'83. He concluded his career with 13,516 points (17.6 per game) and 10,444 rebounds (13.6 per game). Cowens was enshirned in the Hall of Fame in 1991.
