Dixon has an almost unparalleled international career in both length of time and scope of distance. He first competed internationally at the 1971 World Cross Country Championships and lasted until the 1988 Olympics Games. He competed in the Olympics at 1500 Meters, 5000 Meters and the Marathon. Dixon captured the 1972 Olympic Bronze at 1500, finished fourth at 5000 Meters in 1976 and won the 1983 New York City Marathon. Dixon ranked among the world top ten at both 1500 meters (1972-3rd, '73-3rd, '74-4th, '75-3rd, '76-6th) and 5000 meters (1975-1st, '76-4th, '78-7th, '79-6th).
