Elder made her Olympic debut in Munich in 1972, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 400 meters and finished fifth with the British 4x400 meter relay team. A the 1974 Commonwealth Games, she took a silver medal in the 400 meters and a gold medal on the relay, a feat she duplciated four years later. At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Elder again advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400 meters and was a member of the British relay team which finished seventh. She entered both the 400 and 800 meters at the 1978 European Championships, but enjoyed her greatest success as an indoor runner, three times capturing the European Indoor Championship at 400 meters, her 1979 victory was over Czechoslovakia's Jarmila Kratochvilova.
