Esposito played his first three seasons (1964-'67) with the Chicago Black Hawks before being traded to the Boston Bruins. In 1969, thanks to the N.H.L.'s increase of the regular season from 50 games to 80, Esposito scored a record 126 points, the first player over 100 points. In the 1970-'71 season, he scored an N.H.L. record 76 goals and also had a record 152 points. Esposito won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer in 1969, '71-'74 and the Hart Trophy as the league M.V.P. in 1969 & '74. He helped lead the Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 1970 & '72. Esposito was the captain of the Canadian team in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, which the Canadians won in dramatic fashion. Esposito led the team in scoring during the series, which helped him win the Lou Marsh Trophy as the Canadian Athlete of the Year. Esposito played in ten all-star games (1969-'75, '77, '78 & '80). He was traded to the New York Rangers in 1975, where he finished his career in 1981 with totals of 717 goals and 1,590 points, both second all-time to Gordie Howe at the time of his retirement. Esposito was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
