Fennell graduated from the University of North Dakotah as a defensive lineman in 1973 and played the next ten seasons from the Edmonton Eskimos. He was a CFL All-Star five straight seasons (1977-'81). In his ten seasons, the Eskimos won the Grey Cup six times (1975, '78-'82) and he was the defensive MVP of the Grey Cup in 1978 and '82. Fennell was selected as the Outstanding Canadian Player in 1979. In 1990, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
