1972 Olympic Wrestling Champion.

A three-time N.C.A.A. champion, Gable won the 1971 World Championship and 1972 Olympics in the 68kg class of Freestyle Wrestling. During the Munich Olympics he was named as the outstanding wrestler having not allowed a single point. Gable later coached the Iowa Hawkeyes to 15 N.C.A.A. championships and coached the 1984 U.S. Freestyle team to seven gold medals. He was elected to the U.S. Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980 and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1985.
