1976 Olympic 3000 Meter Steeplechase Champion
Garderud competed in the 1968 Olympics at 800 meters and 1500 meters, finishing 4th and 7th in the heats, respectively, and failing to advance. At the 1972 Olympics, he finished fourth in his 3000 meter steeplechase heat and fifth in his 5000 meter heat, failing to advance in either race. A week after the Olympics, he set a world record of 8:20.8 in the steeplechase. In 1974, Garderud won the silver medal at the European Championships and set two world records in 1975. At the 1976 Olympic Games, Garderud won the gold medal in the 3000 meter steeplechase in a world record time of 8:08.02.
