Geoffrion played in the N.H.L. from 1950 to 1968, all but the last two season with the Montreal Canadiens, he finished his career with the New York Rangers. He won the Hart Trophy as the league's M.V.P. in 1961 and the Art Ross Trophy for leading scorer in 1955 and '61. Geoffrion won six Stanley Cups with Montreal. He coached the Rangers, Atlanta Flames and Canadiens following his career and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. He had recurring stomach problems that twice forced him to resign from coaching. He passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 75, the same day the Canadiens retired his number 5.
