1977 Football Writers Footballer of the Year
Hughes was a defender who played professionally for twenty years, mostly with Liverpool from 1967-'79. He played for the English national team from 1969-'80, serving as captain 23 times. Hughes was a member of the 1970 English World Cup team, but did not play. In 2008 he was elected to the English National Football Hall of Fame. Hughes died at age 57 after battling a brain tumor.
