Three-time snooker masters champion
Paul Hunter was unable to add to his tally of ranking event titles last season, but consistent performances allowed him to move into the top four for the first time in his career. The Leeds potter won his first match in all eight ranking events. Snooker’s premier invitation event, the Masters, returned to Wembley in February and there was a familiar story as Hunter completed a spectacular trademark fight-back to take the golden trophy for the third time in four years. After wins over David Gray, Mark Williams and John Higgins, Hunter came up against an in-form Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final and fell 7-2 behind. But he stormed back to win 10-9, just as he had against Fergal O’Brien in 2001 and Williams in 2002. Hunter took his first ranking title at the 1998 Regal Welsh, beating John Higgins in the final. He won the same tournament in 2002, defeating Ken Doherty, then added the British Open in Telford later the same year by seeing off Ian McCulloch.
