Hunter joined the Canadian national ski team in 1970 and competed at his first Olympics in 1972 in Sapporo. He finished 20th in the downhill, 11th in giant slalom and 19th in slalom. Since the Olympics also counted as the World Championships prior to 1984, Hunter captured a bronze medal in the combined, which was not yet an Olympic event. in Innbruck in 1976, he finished 10th in downhill, 22nd in giant slalom and 23rd in slalom.
