Mackey was a second round pick out of Syracuse Unviersity by the Baltimore Colts in the 1963 N.F.L. draft, he played for the Colts until 1971 and then one season for the San Diego Chargers. A tight end, he was a five-time Pro Bowl selection (1963, '65-'68) and a member of the N.F.L. 1960's All-Decade Team. He caught a 75 yard deflected touchdown pass in Super Bowl V, helping the Colts to a 16-13 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Mackey became the second tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
