Two Time World Professional Road Race Champion
At the 1971 World Championships, he won the silver medal in the amateur road race, Maertens competed for Belgium at the 1972 Olympics, finishing 20th in the road race. The following year he won the silver medal in the professional road race at the World Championships. He subsequently won the World Road Race Championship in 1976 and 1981. Maertens won the green jersey for sprinting at the Tour De France three times (1976, '78 & '81), and he won a total of 16 stages in his Tour de France career. In 1977, he won the Tour of Spain and Paris-Nice classic.
