1948 and 1952 Olympic Champion

Mathias won the 1948 Olympic decathlon as a 17 year old. He continued to compete in decathlon for the next four years, setting the first of his world records in 1950 and also playing two years of college football at Stanford. He played in the 1952 Rose Bowl and also won his second decathlon gold in 1952 in Helsinki by 912 points. Mathias played himself in the 1954 film, The Bob Mathias Story and worked in small roles for the next decade. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1967 to 1975 from California. Mathias died of cancer at age 75.
