1976 Olympic Downhill & Slalom Champion
Mittermaier had skied on the World Cup circuit since the first season in 1967. She won her first race, a slalom in 1969 and won five more slaloms in the next five seasons. However, in 1976 she dominated the season winning Olympic gold in the downhill and slalom and a silver in the giant slalom. In Innsbruck, she also captured the World Championship combined, which was not yet an Olympic medal event. She also won the overall World Cup title in 1976, as well as the slalom and combined titles. Mittermaier skied all three events at the 1968 Olympics i Grenoble, with a best result of 20th in downhill. At the 1972 Olympics, she finished 6th in downhill, 12th in giant slalom and 17th in slalom. In her World Cup career, she won 10 races and reached the podium 41 times. She was seventh overall in the 1968-'69 World Cup, sixth in '71-'72, fourth in '72-'73, sixth again in '73-'74 and third in '74-'75. She married fellow skier Christian Neureuther and their son Felix currently skis on the World Cup circuit.
