Nightingale was a member of the British team that won the team event at the 1976 Olympics in modern pentathlon. Nightingale finished 10th in the individual event in Montreal. He returned to the Olympics in 1980, finishing 8th in the team event and 15th in the individual, despite the fastest time in the running portion of the competition.
