Born in Sweden, Nystrom moved to Canada at age 4 and shortly became introduced to the sport of ice hockey. He was a left wing who played his entire career (1972-'86) for the New York Islanders, and is best known for scoring the winning goal in overtime of game 6 of the 1981 Stanly Cup finals to give the Islanders their first of four consecutive titles. His most polific season was 1977-'78, where Nystrom recorded 30 goals and 29 assists. He scored 235 goals in his career, plus an additional 39 in the playoffs, four of those in overtime. His number 23 was retired by the Islanders in 1995.
