1952 Olympic Champion and Former World Heavyweight Champion
At age 17, Patterson captured the middleweight gold medal at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Over the next four years, Patterson worked himself up to a heavyweight and captured the World Heavyweight title that had been vacated by a retired Rocky Marciano when he won a six-man tournament organized by Ring Magazine, defeating Archie Moore in November of 1956 by a knockout in the fifth round. On June 29, 1959,Patterson lost to Sweden's Ingemar Johansson by TKO in the third round, losing the heavyweight title. Johansson again faced Patterson on June 20, 1960, Patterson regained the title with a fifth round knockout. In doing so, Patterson became the first boxer to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship. In their third contest, Patterson retained the title with a sixth round knockout of Johansson. Patterson lost his title again on September 25, 1962, this time to Sonny Liston by a first round knockout. Liston knocked out Patterson again in the first round in a rematch. Patterson would continue to fight until 1972, his last fight was a loss to Muhammad Ali. He finished his professional career with a record of 55-8-1, with 40 knockouts. Patterson and Johansson became good friends in retirement, and ran the Stockholm Marathon together in 1982 and 1983. Patterson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He passed away from complciations of Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer at the age of 71.
