Holder of the One Hour World Record
Ritter won silver medals at the 1962 World Championships in the individual road race and the 100 kilometer team time trial. At the 1964 Olympic Games, he finished 74th in the road race and 7th in the team time trial. He turned professional in 1967 and set the world record in the hour race at 48,653 kilometers. He won four stages of the Tour of Italy and finished 47th in his only Tour de France in 1975.
