Schaerer won the gold medal with Josef Benz at the 1980 Olympics and also piloted the silver medal four-man team. Schaerer and Benz also won a bronze medal in 1976 and a silver medal on the four-man team. He won fourteen World Championship medals, including seven golds (Two-man: 1977, '78 & '82; four-man: 1971, '73, '75 & '86).
