1972 and 1976 Olympic Bronze Medalist
Ranked in the top ten in the world in the javelin throw every year from 1972 to '79, with a high of second in 1975 and '76. Schmidt twice won the bronze medal in the Olympics behind East Germany's Ruth Fuchs. Schmidt established a world record in 1977 of 227' 5". Schmidt was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1994.
