The first player ever drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976 with the first overall pick out of Oklahoma, Selmon proved worthy of that pick. He totaled 78 1/2 sacks in his career. He was an N.F.L. All-Pro in 1979, '80 and '82. He played in six straight Pro Bowls (1979-'84) and was the N.F.L. Defensive Lineman of Year in 1979. Selmon retired in 1984, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fand was inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame in 1995. he athletic director at the University of South Florida, Selmon died from the complications of a stroke at age 56.
