Shavers was a hard-hitting heavyweight who gained his greatest fame in a September 1977 loss to Muhammad Ali. He defeated Ken Norton and then earned another shot at the title. He lost a decision to Larry Holmes in September 1979. Shavers continued to box past his 50th birthday, finishing his career with a record of 74-11-1 with 68 knockouts.
