1984 Olympic 400 Meter Bronze Medalist

Smallwood-Cook was one of the most successful British athletes in history, earning eight medals at the Olympics, Worlds and Europeans. She emerged on the international scene, winning gold at the Commonwealth Games on the English 4x100 meter relay team and earning a silver medal with Great Britain at the European Championships. Smallwood won three sprint silver medals at the 1979 World University Games. At the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, she finished sixth in the 100 meters and fifth at 200, winning a bronze medal on the 4x100 meter relay squad. She finished second over 100 meters at the 1981 World Cup and won the 200 meters at the World University Games that same year. At the first World Championships in 1983, now competing as Kathy Cook, she took the bronze medal in the 200 meters and a silver medal on the 4x100 meter relay. She captured bronze medals in both the 400 meters and 4x100 meter relay at the 1984 Olympics, where she also finished fourth in the 200 meters. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games, Cook won four medals, including gold in the 4x100 meter relay.
