Stracey began his professional career in 1969. In1974, Stracey defeated Roger Menetrey for the European union Welterweight title, with an eighth round knockout. He received his first world title shot in December of 1975 against W.B.C. world Welterweight champion Jose Napoles, Stracey won the fight by a technical knockout. On March 20 of 1976, he retained the title against perennial world title challenger Hedgemon Lewis by a knockout in round ten, but on June 22, at Wembley, he lost the world title, being knocked out in twelve rounds by Carlos Palomino. In his next fight, he lost Dave Boy Green, by a knockout in round ten. Stracey retired in 1978. He had a career record of 45 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw, with 37 knockouts.
