In 1978, Strong claimed the silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. She ran in her first Olympics in 1980, advancing to the semifinals. In 1982, Strong captured the Commonwealth Games title and in 1983 she finished fifth at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki. Strong earned a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, finishing second to American Benita Fitzgerald-Brown.
