Taylor was the third overall pick in the 1964 N.F.L. draft out of Arizona State. He spent his entire career with the Washington Redskins, through 1977. He won the 1964 Rookie of the Year award, as a running back with 755 rushing yards and 814 receiving yards. In 1966, he transitioned to wide receiver and was a Pro Bowl selection eight times (1964-'67, '72-'75). He was also chosen as a member of the N.F.L.'s All-Decade team for the 1960's. Upon his retirement following the 1977 season, Taylor held N.F.L. career records with 649 receptions, 9,110 receiving yards and 79 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and served as Redskins' receiving coach from 1981 to 1994..
