Thomas made her international debut for England in 1974 and was named team captain in 1976 at the age of 21. A defender, she would serve as team captain through 1985, earning 56 caps for the national team, a record at the time as was her nine year stint as captain. In 29 games as captain, England posted a record of 20-5-4, finishing as UEFA runners-up in 1984. Thomas (then Carol McCune) was an alternate in the 1979 Superstars and participated the following year.
