1976 Olympic 1000 Meter Time Trial Silver Medalist
Vaarten raced at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, finishing out of the running in the 1000 meter match spring and capturing the silver medal in the 1000 meter time trial. As a professional, he won a bronze medal in the match sprint in 1979; a gold in the 1986 World Championship Kieren and a silver in the points race. Vaarten was also a world championship medalist in the kieren twice, a bronze in 1988 and a silver in 1990.
