Viren made his international debut at the 1971 European Championships, finishing seventh at 5,000 meters and 17th at 10,000 meters. In 1972, he exploded onto the scene with gold medals at both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, winning the 10,000 in a world record time of 27:38.40, despite falling on the twelfth lap. Viren won a bronze medal over 5,000 meters at the 1974 European Championships. At the 1976 Olympics, Viren became the first athlete to win the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at successive Olympics. After winning his fourth gold medal, he entered the marathon where he finished fifth. At the 1980 Olympics, Viren finished fifth in the 10,000 meters and failed to finish the marathon. He was a member of the Finnish Parliament from 1999 to 2007.
