Weaver won the W.B.A. Heavyweight World Champion on March 31, 1980 in a dramatic 15th round knockout of John Tate while trailing on points. He defended the title by defeating Gerri Coetzee and James "Quick" Tillis before losing to Michael Dokes and December 10, 1982. Weaver finished his career with a record of 41-18-1 with 28 knockouts.
