1975 EUROPEAN HEAT 5 - SPANISH HEAT
The Spanish heat of European Superstars was held in...Aldershot, England. The Spanish delegation could not find a suitable venue for the events, so the site of the British heat was used instead. The heat was dominated by the man who would completely dominate European Superstars for two years, Swedish pole vaulter Kjell Isaksson, a former world record holder. The most memorable incident of the competition would come in the gym tests. The British representative was squash player Jonah Barrington. Barrington considered himself to be in tremendous shape and was looking forward to proving it in the gym tests. The gym test was to be the final event of the first day. Isaksson won the 100 meters, weight lifting and shooting; Barrington was second in the weightlifting and won the tennis to nobody's surprise. In the gym tests, Belgian sprinter Alfons Brijdenbach edged Isaksson in the medicine ball throw, and Barrington's 25 parallel bar dips were two behind Isaksson. As the seven competitors lined up for the squat thrusts, Barrington was going faster than any of the others. He estimated he had completed about 75 squats. When the announcer read off the scores, it was "Jonah Barrington...25." Barrington was shocked and stormed off, not to be seen again. The judge ruled that Barrington was not completing the squats, his knees were not coming up to his elbows and video seems to prove the judge correct. With Barrington's scores discounted, Isaksson wins the gym tests and would win the swimming and 600 meter steeplechase the next day to establish a Superstars record of 69 points. Barrington would be invited back the following year for the UK National Superstars and a chance to atone for his behavior.
