1981 IRISH FINAL

After three qualifying rounds, eight men remained to challenge defending champion Bernard Brogan for the third Irish Superstars title. Each athlete contested seven of the nine events, which mirrored the events in World Superstars with the exception of tennis. Olympic paddler Declan Burns got off to a strong start with two wins in the first three events. Brogan was only entered in one of the first three events and failed to produce any points in the gym test. Burns was a standout in that event, totalling a near-record 44 chin ups. The rowing proved interesting, as neither kayaker Burns or Olympic oarsman Willie Ryan were prohibited from the event. Even with the heavy favorite's mantle on Ryan, he lost to the oldest man in the competition, field hockey player David Judge. Brogan got on track with an anticipated win in the 100 meters and while rugby's Vinnie Baker won the cycling in which neither Burns nor Brogan scored, Broagn defeated Burns in the 800 meters. Another win for Brogan in the soccer test put him in first place with just the obstacle course remaining. Brogan had 32 points to Burns's 31 with Gibson at 25 and Ryan at 23 1/2 also having a chance to win. Brogan had the fastest time through the obstacle course, but incurred a five second penalty for knocking over the high bar, giving the win in the obstacle course and the overall event to Declan Burns, Becker took second behind Burns to tie Brogan for second overall.
