Tom Petranoff
Former Javelin Throw World Record holder.
Petranoff jumped into the world scene in 1983, setting a world record of 327' 3", winning the silver medal at the inagural World Championships and ranking second in the world. He claimed a world best of 280-1 with the new javelin in 1986. An Olympian in 1984 and 1988, Petranoff won World silver in 83 and was fourth in 1987. He also grabbed World Cup bronze in 85 for the U.S., and silver in 92 for South Africa. Petranoff ranks 11th on the world all-time list with a 292-6 in 1991. The Athletics Congress (now USA Track & Field) suspended Petranoff for six years at the end of 1988 for taking part in a tour of South Africa, which was at the ime banned from international competition by the IAAF. He competed under the South African flag until 1993, when he represented that nation at the IAAF World Championships in Stuttgart. Petranoff never relinquished his U.S. citizenship while in South Africa. Petranoff moved his family back from South Africa to Cranston, R.I. in 1998. He was ranked number one in the world in 1986.
