1968 Olympic Champion
Perhaps unlike any other athlete in history, Beamon became a legend in just a single moment. When he shattered the world record at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Beamon assured his place in sports history even though little is known of the rest of his career. He was ranked number one in the world only once, in 1968, and was in the top 10 only three other times (10th in '66, 4th in '67 and '69). But 1968 was his year, and October 18th was his day. On his first jump in the final, Beamon lept 29' 2 1/2" to destroy the world record by 21 3/4 inches. His record would stand for 23 years until it was broken by 1992 Superstars champion Mike Powell. After his Olympic victory, Beamon never jumped farther than 26' 11 1/2".
