Byrd was born in San Francisco and played basketball collegiately at Columbia University, where he was a three-time All-Ivy League selection, graduating in 1979. He was drafted in the 10th round of the NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, but an injury prevented him from playing for the Celtics. He moved to London and played professional basketball in Great Britain from 1979 to 1997, initially for Crystal Palace. In 1984 Byrd was granted British citizenship and competed internationally for England.
